Abstract:This report introduces the results and major problems of rice breeding in Japan. In the last 60 years, 352 rice varieties were registered in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for Japan. Some varieties have been grown for 20 years running, such as Koshihkari, Sasanishik, Zhovbare etc. The experiments had shown that the selected varieties are trending to high-yield, early-maturity, short-straw, loding-resistant, resistent to rice blast and significant inereas in rice quality and coldtolerance, with the development of years. As far as the number of varieties and yield goes, work on selecting new varieties have slowly developed, which genetic resource were very po (?) r and the phenomenon of singular varitey has arisen in recent years.
